Lightbulb Re: We need our symbol

I have not found a mon for Ikko. They seem to have been a collection of peasants and monks so a buddhist symbol would be appropriate. I have 2 alternatives I am working on and will post them shortly.

I must warn you that we do not intend to take much from the Ikko-Ikki monks, we chose the name for its meaning and found the monks later.

That being said, I am always open to new suggestions for the symbols, and nothing will be truly set in stone until the game goes into beta.

Ikko Ikki monks weren't a single group, they were several distinct groups spread across Japan. The main group was the Hongan-ji, coming from the Noto Peninsula and the Ishiyama Hongan-ji temple fortress in Osaka. I'm not sure if this is correct, but on that keeps popping up in my searches is this one.

I have created three crests one is a collection of buddhist symbols. Another is an owl a harbinger of death with a kanji for the number 4 in his eye. The number 4 in Japan is associated with death because one of its pronouciations is similar to the kanji for death. The last symbol is a bamboo chute, a symbol of strength of character, a koi fish, a symbol of wealth, placed in the shape of the kanji for power.

Personlly I like the bamboo and fish followed next by the owl. I am planning on working on the owl some more. I think I can make improvments.

I quite like the three symbols you have presented. But don't feel limited to just Buddhist symbols. Like Ronin said earlier, the clan name "Ikko" has very little to do with the monks. All of the values you used were absolutely on par with the Ikko's ideals but I do think (this is just my opinion) that the visual symbols should be a bit more intimidating. Obviously adding color can greatly change how a symbol is perceived but I think we should keep our options very open for the time being.

Ok I've redone the owl symbol in color as well as black and white. This should be a little more intimidating crest.

I can't see myself screaming in fear when I see an Owl flying on a banner above an army....ha ha. The owl isn't bad, not sure I "like it" when I picture it as the Symbol of a great clan. I did like the first one though, the collection of Buddhist symbols, though again, not sure what to think about how that'll look, seeing as we aren't THE Ikko Ikki, but rather just a clan (of awesome...) using the name Ikko.

I feel like a jerk because I haven't gotten around to coming up with my own symbols to suggest, but I've been distracted. So.....take my criticisms as you will I suppose.

Side note-edit: I'll add that, as far as symbols striking fear into the enemy and all that good stuff, it should be noted that the Tokugawa clan, last of the Shogunate, had this as a symbol/mon: (Though I'm use to seeing it on a purple background/banner)
Spoiler:

Sorry for the giant one! >_<

The Triple Hollyhock leaf mon is obviously not "fearsome" but was never-the-less a great and recognizable symbol that belonged to a great and powerful clan, and therefore made to be fearsome because of who it belonged to.

On a side-side-note @Ashikaga: As I was thinking about this, it finally hit me as to where I had seen that name before lol.

Why not take a lesson from history. Combine the Mon of two clans that historically supported the Ikko-Ikki. We should take the image on the inside of the three parts of the Asakura mon, and put that inside the wings of the Mori mon.
