Pretty soon eoeforums.com will become a real community, and with that formal introduction comes contests, events, and prizes.
If you have any ideas at all for any contests, or events we can hold - and the prizes resulting; then please share.
Here are a few that hashc0de and I came up with:
Prizes:
Amazon.com gift certificate
Two year domains from namecheap.com (Great service, I have 10 domains with them)
(Possible) newegg.com or tigerdirect.com gift certificate
...
Contests:
Riddles
Picture hunt (Find certain objects in real life, take pictures, and then be the first to post the pictures)
...
Events:
A long-running picture hunt, where each picture of each item (There'd be 100+) would get you a 'picture point'; the top runners after a month would receive prizes.

Fanart contest (i think there is already one though)

ive seen banner contets, sig. contests and avatar contests :)
maybe for those who havent preordered a slot in the beta or what not, maybe even a few free months when it comes out.

Real life bonuses is nice, but keep your sights on the game, dont spend money to get people to do the contests, it will just push you guys back some, keep your money for development, instead do cool stuff for winners on the forums, or in game, and such, and make entering the contests like a 2$ fee, something that is worth the prize and such a small donation that no one who really wants this game to reign supreme would object to.

On the flip side, maybe paying out 25 dollars for a really good banner will counter the price of the contest if just one person opted for the pre-order option. Don't think it's a bad idea, don't want to go blowing entire savings for game on one contest, but an allocated amount would make sense.
Contests that give in game prizes would be interesting, as long as the prize is merely for bragging rights, rather than something that gives an unfair advantage.

That's a good point too, maybe give in game status for homes or armor for contests held in beta, that'd be fun.

Maybe a cool-looking outfit or ..a throne upon which I can sit so the rest of you can fall to your knees and worship ...*blink* - I agree with Trin that it shouldn't give you an unfair advantage, but just a special something would be neat. Like, a trophy to display in your house and such. Oh and Kurakushin's idea gets my vote, everybody likes Forum Points.
RL prizes are always fun but I think most of us agree that your money is better spent towards the game, rather than giving us free stuff.

One thing I would love to see is being able to engrave something onto our weapons. For instance, by winning a contest, we would have our katanas (or whatever your character uses) modified so in the explanation text, it would have a phrase of our choice.

I think a riddle contest would be a lot of fun, could do one for actual prizes, and maybe some for points. Be like Zen koans, that'd be awesome.

In another forum they had a really fun game where the one who was hosting it would post pictures from a movie (Before that giving what genre of the movie) and the first one to get what the movie is from the picture get's a total number of tally's/points. Just a suggestion :P

That would be great as long as we stuck to either Japanese movies, or samurai movies (which are inevitably all japanese).
I think this is a good idea. There are quite a few obscure samurai movies out there that would be great for a quiz.

I think the idea of offering some sort of status symbol in game is a neat one. Either markings on the house to indicate elder, as long as not overboard it'd be cool.
Prizes:
Why not a prize to become an alpha tester, or later down the line a beta? (Assuming winner is applicable)

For prizes the paypal gift certificates are always nice and ingame unique prizes always seem to be popular.
