Will characters exist in the player world when the player logs off? I am assuming that player hired NPCs will (such as guards), but will the player? I can understand that a player would not want to logg off in the middle of the wilderness, and have his character brutally gored by a boar when the player has no real control of that event. So maybe PCs could remain in the player world if in town, or at the player's parcel of land, and possibly act as an NPC, doing jobs that we're too lazy to do while online, such as garden or build, or what ever you have?
Sorry, just realized I haven't been labeling my questions and ideas

If I remember correctly then we had a discussion about this on the other forums. I don't think the matter was resolved by then so a new discussion would be in place.
My bit on the subject:
If you log out, you should do it a savezone. Either your own house (shag if your not rich enough) or a town's inn or hostel. There you can't be harmed. You should however be able to choose to log off for instance under a tree in a forest because you just don't feel like walking to a town or your home. This would have some risks to it though. People would be able to see you and thus kill you and/or steal your stuff.
Also what about contacting someone who is not online at the moment. I think that you should have an NPC you can let operate your house (when you can afford one that is ;)) as a head servant. He is basicly the leader of your other NPC's and you give him the tasks in an easy screen of tasks for instance. Also when you log off, he should be able to take messages from other players in the form of scrolls or pieces of paper, etc. In my opinion this NPC should just come free with your first house or whatever you bought to call 'home'. From him you can then buy more NPC's and give them orders of what to do. Think of basic stuff like guarding your land, looking after your farming grounds, etc. Anything beyond basic would lag up the server. Also there should be a restriction on how much and how long you can have an NPC, so that people don't start having 500 mil NPC armies clashing against eachother (would be cool but this isn't Shogun :))

Dawn, another game similiar to this concept planned on doing this as your character would be in "sleep mode" and basically couldn't be harmed. I like the idea though if you log out in an unsafe place, you could get killed or robbed, that's a good idea, really realistic.

Well, if, as Shinoku said, a character were forced to logg off in an unfavourable area, I'd feel a lot more at ease if that character were then under NPC control, and could defend itself in normal NPC fashion, not just sit there like a catatonic, waiting for some lucky assailant to come by and relieve my of my head and posessions. Maybe this is a viable solution? I would think it would'n't be too terribly difficult to implement, as NPC coding will have to be done in any case.

This is a solid idea too, maybe even program the character to make a b-line towards a safehouse or safe area.
