"A Shanghai online gamer has been given a suspended death sentence for killing a fellow gamer.
Qiu Chengwei stabbed Zhu Caoyuan in the chest when he found out he had sold his virtual sword for 7,200 Yuan (£473).
The sword, which Mr Qiu had lent to Mr Zhu, was won in the popular online game Legend of Mir 3.
Attempts to take the dispute to the police failed because there is currently no law in China to protect virtual property. "

I doubt it, and I hope it never gets created - virtual items should follow a virtual rule as they're not rule, and just an entry in a database...

Wow, that reminds me of folks that used to ebay stuff in EQ. It was terrible, and ruined the game. In my opinion game stuff stays game stuff, paying real life money for things like that is just screwy. He shoulda stabbed the guy with an ingame sword, no problemos then, har har.

I could understand Korea having a gamer Police. Over there Gaming is as big as baseball. And kids, even adults pride themseves at "Pwning" another person.

Hey, you can draw a lot of parallels from this. I personally have issues with the idea of intellectual property. I mean, this is just like someone killing someone else for playing their copywritten music or stealing their written ideas. Don't know what to say about this one... Very intriguing.

well if you think of it this way... music ... written materials... they are in portable forms ... and are printed in mass quantites (or put on cd in the case of music) while this sword the guy got was one of a kind... sure its intellectual property... but it does not belong to the player... its part of the game and therefore belongs to the company that runs the game... (if i know how copyrights work... which i highly doubt... heh.)... the guy just needed to go outside more often... and posibly play some sports... or something ... its just that if they guy was that dependant on the game that it was almost an extention of his reality ... *shrug* thats just not healthy...

What intrigues me so much about this is that there are online games in China, I thought that was pretty Communist and all, figured they'd be out working in the old salt mines instead of playing computer games. Hmmm, if China were to make some games they might be pretty tight. I've met folks that took the gaming thing too far, it's scary.

I can't believe the lengths that some people go to because of video games, its honestly sad. This incident reminds me of a few years back when that American had his EQ account deleted by accident, so he went and took his life... Honestly I would hope that my parents or friends or other such important people would realize that I was getting so horribly addicted when I stopped doing much of the things that I love to do outside just to level in an MMO or just to cap a few more n00bs to raise my rank on the server, and did something to stop me from going to far down that path. Like right now I have a friend who is hopelessly addicted to FFXI and he has been using my internet to play it because his mother took away his internet because of it. Sure I should stop it, but the kid gives me rides ANYWHERE I want to go thus attracting me towards not pulling the rug out from udner him.

Pimping out your computer for transoportation...nice...
That is taking games too far. I dont see how people can even bring themselves to the idea of actually harming someone in real life over a few pixels of screen, sure steal or sell my stuff i will be a little upset but its just a game get over it, go outside and get a tan.
