Well, I was browsing a PC game store yesterday and decided to give guild wars a try since it was number 1 on the fileplanet reviews, and I must say, woah its fun. Not to mention no monthly subscriptions! But, anyways, anyone else here buy it? If so how do they like it? Some how it reminds me of a old game I used to play, Nox, but a 3d better version of it.

I am seriously getting confused on why its so freaking awesome :Eyecrazy: I see its graphics and stuff, it looks great, but doesnt seem to have anything that makes it ultra unique.
If i get my hands on it, maybe ill change my opinion; maybe. The one thing that really does interest me though, is the idea of no monthly payment. Wonder how they will survive.

Take it from someone who has a lvl 20 character in Guild Wars: it's stops being fun very very fast. I have both a cap level character in both Guild Wars and WoW, and honestly, I spent much much more time with WoW.
That, of course, is opinion.

i just plain old don't like it, biggest waste of $50-some i've ever spent...
this is partially because my computer isn't graphically able to handle the game very well so i get lagged out when i play in PVP, but then also i have fun mobbing in mmorpg's but in this you can't do that, you die when you have like 4 baddies on you...also i hate having to be intown to chat...

Guild wars is nothing like wow its not meant to be a long quest based rpg your supposed to be able to get to 20 quick most ppl do it in a weekend. Guild wars is unique its based on skill not lvl and once you get to 20 you are going to get bored unless you join a guild and participate in the "guild wars". The game will have updates so they will get some money from that but also its ncsoft they have l1 and l2 and those games make hella money in monthly fees.
If you want to play a rpg you should get wow guild wars is more like a fps you have to improve your skills not your charters.

Yes, but the game is not built upon levels. Its your skill when u unlock evrything nd try out new builds.

Too me, I totally love guild wars. 30 mins in the beta and I was hooked.
Theres just something about it I love, especially the pvp. Really, if you want to spend hours and hours trying to take your character from level 1-10 this is not your game. Guild wars has a great community, very in-depth quests and did i mention good pvp?
Really, I could just spend every day on that game in the pvp arena. Every time its different, and sometimes you battle koreans, guilds, groups of friends, and sometimes, a complete and total noob who hired a teamfull of lvl 15 mercs. haha. good times.
did i mention good pvp?
Also, the mass array of spells, enchantments, weapons, strengths and weaknesses is just plain cool. It may take some time to get the right character for you, and then practise day in and day out to get the perfect or sweet combinations of skills, but thats fun too ;). did i mention good pvp?
Anyway, this is just my opinion.

In my oppinion.. Thanks but no thanks.
Played it for about a week.
The interface of the whole game is just plain bad. This was the first thing that really got my attention. You either go for simple (Lineage 2) or hard (EQ, FF:XI) but not something that hangs in the middle.
I agree on the no-fee policy wich I think is grand. However with no frequent updates (because of the no-fee policy) you have to wait for the expansion pack to come out. Did I mention that it's bond to come out Jan 2006  It wouldn't be a problem if there was enough to do after level 20. Sure there's pvp (wich is really well done) but in my oppinion this get's old after a few weeks.
In depth quest? Come on.. The quest are a basic wack the monster, get an item, bring it back or the kill the boss and save the world type of thing.
Apart from that most of the quest don't really have anything to do with the storyline and the storyline...could've been done allot better. If you want a real storyline with some great in depth quest wich actually have stuff to do with the storyline and actually makes you be a part of the game, then I suggest you go for Final Fantasy: XI online.
And the community.. God don't get my started... In most MMO's you meet new people by going to spots in the game where peoples with the same objectives go. Here you meet those people through parties where you bond. This creates friendships wich is basicly the whole point now a days to MMO's. In Guildwars you can only see the rest of the world inside towns. I works like a huge hub wich connects you to other people in the game. Here you meet everyone and that's it. Go outside and only people you have partied with will show. So basicly your alone outside of town. Nice..
I'm not saying the game is bad. It's just short.. (yes shorter than WoW even) I want a game wich I can keep playing for ages and ages.. Just how I played Lineage 1 & 2, FF XI:Online and Project Entropia. I want to explore a world and meet new people all the time. This world needs to be big so there's always something to do after you reach your most recent objective. Also MMO's need regular updates to keep players busy. Expansion packs won't work if the game loses it's content after 2 months (at most).
This is a nice alternative for people who can't get a creditcard yet. It's a good game with a brilliant pvp system but there's better stuff out there.

Yeah, I understand what you mean.
oh, and here is a quote i found, originally at http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion.cfm/load/forums/loadforum/511/loadthread/43300/setstart/1/loadclass/175
If your looking for a MMORPG, this is not the game for you. Guild Wars is not a MMORPG, but a CORPG (Competitive Online Role-Playing Game).
That being said, is the game worth it? If your big on PvP or group play, and thats your main cup of tea, then yes, buy the game. The professions are well balanced and there is a large array of skills/weapons for you to use. Its easily this games shining point. Learning the PvP is easy, and almost intuitive, but takes a while to master. You can play against up to 6 different PvP teams at a time, with each team having as many as 8 players.
If your big on PvE or solo, then its a different story. The PvE, or RPG mode as they call it, plays exactly like a single player game, without the depth of a single player game. You have next to no effect on the storyline or the gameworld as a whole. Depending on how many hours you sit playing it, you can beat the PvE in as little as a week, or as long as a couple months. Max character level is 20, as the previous person stated, and you will reach that point 3/4ths of the way through the PvE. The rest of the time your just looking for items and skills to unlock for the PvP part, as its the only way to use 90% of the content in PvP. Unlocking all the content could easy take several months, long after you have beaten the PvE. Each time you play through the PvE, its exactly the same. All the missions, all the skills, just about everything but monsters is in exactly the same place every time. Each time you enter a particular tile in the game, you know exactly what kind of monsters will be waiting for you in said tile. IMO, it gets old fast.
So, should you buy the game? Depends on how much you like PvP.

I played guild wars for about 2 weeks it sucked, it was lacking something, its hella fun until you get to level 20, which can easily be done in a week, after your level 20 you spend all of your time mindlessly gathering skills and armor and the likes so that you may do quests that bring you no rewards in game. The PVP is lacking, it is all done in a controlled environment where there is virtually nothing to make you fear death, you die and woop what happens you are teleported out of the arena, or woop you win! and guess what happens, you go on to the next controlled fight that takes about 5 or so minutes. You dont gain anything from the pvp, so it is boring and you have nothing to lose, same with the PvE, you dont lose your corpse, you just get a death penalty that stays with you unless you kill more mobs or enter a town...wow so original. GW sucked, a waste of 50 bucks imo.

Hmmm... i still love guild wars. like i said i am attracted to heavy pvp games. well, some of them. to me guild wars takes much more then leveling and skills, but to be able to communivate with fellow members and use teamwork to prevail in the pvp arena(s). Also with the upcoming expansion/update in a couple of months it should be grand.

bud, if you want a pure pvp game, try shadowbane, in that game you can seriously play god and kill whoever you want whenever you want. I love it lol, too abd the population is only at around 300 at prime time now, it used to be in the 1,000's lol, that was hella crazy! well anyways, GW doesnt take much communication if you have teamspeak or ventrillo, it is easier to talk and fight at the same time, and with the use of those real-time voice communication programs the battles become hella easy and repetitive....

Looked like good graphics, but I hear too much negative stuff about it. Most of which is about repetive gameplay issues in PvE, and limited PvP options. Graphics looks sweet though.

I have a question for you? When you look at someones clothes, do you judge them by what they are wearing? do clothes make the person? or do people make the clothes, well people make the clothes no **** lol, but seriously, what you see on the outside should not be put on an equal scale as what you see on the inside.
ShininShado
06-25-2005, 02:08 PM
If that question is to me, there are varying ranges of this question. If someone is dressed decently and acts decently then it warrants they'll be treated with at least some respect. If someone acts in a foolish manner, and is dressed badly, then that warrants little or no respect, or any variation of these scenarios. Clothes aren't the most important thing, but you can't deny appearance has some effect even to a small degree on everyone's impression of others. As far as Guild Wars... if the last post was in reference to Guild Wars, I'd say that I saw the clothes, and it looked good, but once I heard the reputation of what was inside, I thought twice. Now I have no intentions of playing the game. I can only go by other's impression, as I haven't experienced what is on the inside of the game for myself.

I was thinking about buying GW and I wanted to know, how is the combat. Is it like basic MMO where it attacks for itself and you choose skills to use?
Someone please enlighten me.
P.S. If you want a fun little game to play thats medievel times, check this out. http://www.taleworlds.com/index.html
It's got some really cool features like riding horses in battle, Archery from horseback, big scale battles, and a cool skill based combat system.

Hmm Guild Wars, well I saw it in the shops and read the reviews and thought hmm...maybe.
Continued playing Star Wars Galaxies and started doing my Jedi grind....OMFG! This was the dullest and most annoying moment in my gaming life. So I thought maybe I should check something new out that i can play between this boring grind.
Enter Guild Wars, well the graphics were nice and the start was not too shabby either. BUT...I suppose it suffers from the same problems as most other MMORPG's out there...its too damn linear. I was seriously dissapointed with this game, I suppose I was spoiled with SWG. True it has problems and lots of them, but man you can go anywhere and interact with most things...I cant emphasise how important this is.
Anyhow then I found City of Heroes which is a lovely if limited break from the tedium of the SWG grind.
Which finally leads me to Tatsumaki, at last a game that promises the gaming freedom i seek.

Yeh, somehow I really enjoy going around with a signet of capture and making my way to a boss with an elite skill that I want for my 20 R/W :) can't wait to get incendiary arrows, thats gonna own!
I'm poor though, that sucks >_<
EDIT: I tried Mount and blade, rofl that game is fun! If it was online it would own, even if the graphics make me laugh IRL :P
