Tawaraboshi Kanbei is the son of Tawaraboshi Toshiro and Sadako, resturaunt owners in Mikawa province. He was taught the art of cooking until at the age of 11, when his village was raided by bandits. He and his family were unharmed, but it prompted his parents to send him to train with his uncle, Daisuke, a ronin of the Shinkage-ryu.
Daisuke is a caring but stern man. Polite, knowledgable, and never turns down a drinking contest. He taught Kanbei all he could as they traveled from village to village taking odd jobs. Thru these experiences Kanbei found a love for travel; seeing new places and people.
After 7 years of wondering together, Daisuke settled down with a woman in Echigo province and became a farmer. For a year, Kanbei stayed with them and helped with the farming. By then Daisuke urged Kanbei to travel the land, while he was still young and able. At the age of 18 Kanbei became a wanderer.
This is his 5th year of wandering alone, though never alone for long as he meets new friends and travels with them for a time before parting their seperate ways. It is the way of the wanderer. But, he does try to visit his parents and uncle as much as he can.
