I think I've seen maybe a couple pieces of concept art. Concept art is equally as important as the digital game development. There are three reasons I can think of as to why it is one of the most important roles on the team.
*Common thought. Everyone pictures things differently when something is described. The only time people picture the same thing is when they see it. When a team is working on the same thing with the same vision, it comes together a lot better.
*It's motivation for the developers. Everyone is working on their own spare time, and if they have something they would rather be doing, they probably will put their work on the game aside. Having new images is inspiring. They see it, it gives them an idea, and they want to work on it A.S.A.P.
*Concept art, coloured or not, is a simple and effective way to increase the content, popularity, excitement, passion and discussion in the community. To have someone draw something up every two weeks gives the site more life. This way people don't visit after a month and see the last update was in August. If people have something new to look at every couple weeks, it not only looks alot better, but it gets them thinking about the game. To think about the game brings about more relevant discussion.
I think a dedicated concept artist would not only improve the life of the community, but also inspire the development team. In the long run, you will develop a like-mind through these images for everyone on the team, producing a much better game.
You can pick up a hard working artist with a lot of passion from deviant art. I'm sure plenty of them would live (not a typo) to draw concept art for a project like this. Just a thought.
