O.K., I know some of you live in Japan, and others have spent time there. Frankly, I miss being surrounded by the language, so I've taken to watching Japanese TV shows now and then. It feels silly sometimes, because not all the shows are geared towards adults. However, it's nice to hear the language. Most of the Japanese movies I own are period samurai pieces (or pre-1980s), and don't use "modern" language .

So, I thought I would list some of the Japanese TV shows that I've seen, and ask for some opinions on other good shows that I might try to find to watch.

Shows I've seen, all live action - not anime:
Densha Otoko
Gokusen Seasons 1 and 2
Hana yori dango
Kimi wa petto
Kurosagi
Nobuta wa Produce
Nodame Cantabile

Kurosagi and Nodame Cantabile are probably my favorites. Kurosagi, because con artists who only target con artists is just a fun idea, and Nodame Cantabile because I am a pianist, and I can relate.

I watched Densha Otoko because I knew the main character - he was in Battlefield Baseball

Gokusen caught my eye because it sounded like Great Teacher Onizuka with a female/Yakuza twist, which a friend made me watch while I was studying abroad in Ireland.

Kimi wa petto interested me mainly because the main character was an actress I knew from The Last Samurai, and her "pet" was an actor I knew from Gokusen and Hana yori dango.

Nobuta wa produce was a follow-up to Kurosagi, because they share the same actor.

So, in an effort to keep modern conversational Japanese around me now and then (it's expensive to call Japan everyday :P ...), I was wondering what other Japanese TV shows (preferably non-anime) are enjoyable?

I personally enjoy all the Zatoichi series, as well as the Musashi Taiga Drama and the Sukara No Musashi taiga drama starring Kitiniji Kenya, I think thats how u spell his name. ALso the Lone wolf and cuz tv series which is now being released on 4 episode dvds at best buy is alot of fun.

Those are Anime's i think this thread is about actual live action Tv dramas more commonly called Taiga Dramas.

Among others i liked were Musashi which ran for i think 100 episodes.
Yoshitsune which i think also ran for 100 episodes.
Three Generations of the Yagyu Sword
Shadow Warriors (Sonny Chiba as Hattori Hanzo)
Toshiie and Matsu (About Toshiie Meada)
There was a remake of the Lone Wolf and Cub series with Kitanoji Kenya as Ogami Itto.
theres more but those are all i can think of right now lol

I think there is actually a separate thread for the Anime stuff. But this is your first post so id also like to say welcome :)

I've only watched two of those shows: Nodame Cantabile (I wanted to compare it to the anime), and Gokusen.
Gokusen was pretty funny, but the second and third seasons were basically copies of the first but with a different schools and teachers.

Another one I watched was Bloody Monday, which is based on a manga of the same name. (I prefered the manga better)

When it comes to live action asian tv, I prefer Korean shows. (especially their period drama's) My favorite Korean show was Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi. (fantasy + period drama)

[Merged Threads]

Hey decided to start a threat where we can all post Links to watch cool Samurai or Ninja based movies, tv dramas and even Anime. (though lets try and keep it to actual samurai based period stuff not like dragon ballz lol)

So Crunchyroll.com used to be a great site for all that but now its a licensed site but i know they have some period drams still and lotsa anime so if you post a crunchyroll link be sure to post the link that takes you to the show your referring and try to refer a show or movie or anime with the link that takes you to THAT show or movie. So ill get the ball rolling.

I recommend (of course im gonna start with a Yagyu Movie lol)
Intrigue of the Yagyu Clan
Starring Sonny Chiba, Henry Sanada and even Toshiro Mifune.

[link removed]

So i hope this doesnt count as spam if it does sorry :( i just thought itd be cool for us all to have a page with links to cool samurai shows and stuff that weve enjoyed too share amongst the community.
So if its cool then lets see what everyone else recommends.

Linking to streaming movies isn't allowed. That is what google is for ;)
But here are some legal links. :)

Thats alright, it gave me a chance to flex my moderator muscle. Plus, it also brings more activity to this sadly abandoned thread. :)

Senshi: I'll have to check out Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi.

Also, thanks for merging a new thread here. Seeing traffic here after so long is strange, but kinda nice :D
