So today. My mother takes me to see a movie. Actually. Its a documentary. About brothels.
No, really. Its actually about children growing up in brothels. In india. Good show, mind you, I feel kind of weird going to see a documentary in a theatre. Thats what discovery civilizations is for. And, well, the documentary channel.
I need to stop being so interested in whores. My mother also needs to stop being so creepy.
Some of you know what I'm talking about, some of you may not.
(because you're obviously not spending enough time in irc.)
Now reply to this.

Documentaries are always fun, and I think they're starting to take hold on America - what with Super Size Me, the Michael Moore films, etc. - topping off at some box offices.

(Super Size Me was a great movie, but Michael Moore tends to complain and 'credit' weird sources a bit too much)

I've actually only seen one Micheal Moore documentary. I can't say I'm very fond of him. I'm kind of bothered that the schools have us watch the Super Size Me one. I mean, we haven't yet, but we will.

One I try to shove down everyone's throats - although I really shouldn't - is on Stupidity (http://www.trailervision.com/trailer.php?id=143&PHPSESSID=fe0aef071b366e2a5f785c5afd8e417c). Its good, but its kind of weird that its on twice a month on the documentary channel. Its definitly designed for those who want to say "I'm intelligent, I'm watching a documentary."
It smacks of Micheal Moore.
EXPLODE.

Michael Moore is a man who will do anything for money. If anyone of you have read "MICHEAL MOORE IS A STUPID BIG FAT MAN" you will understand. It a book which looks at the facts he isnt really the peoples man he comes across as with worn out T-Shirts etc. He is actually a really wealthing manhatten man who didnt grown up in Flint, Michigen as he says, but actually a wealthy part of Michigen. The book also talks about how he manipulates the footage and sound to change what people actually say and use comments from other speech and apply to one he is interested in.

Everyone go out and see the "Motorcycle Dairies" (in spanish) or "Les Choristes" (In French) if you want to see an awesome movie which isnt some mass produced rubbish out of hollywood, which all have budgets of $300 million and directors only interested in money. Beebe out.

One great documentary i saw bout a year back is called "Touching the Void" about two climbers expriences on a icy mountain, very well reinacted, great stuff. Beebe out.

mod edit: Please use the "edit" button instead of posting twice in a row. Thank you.

Ok thanks for the advice.

I've never liked Micheal Moore Films. He only presents one side of an issue. I don't always disagree with him but even when I agree I would like to see the other side of the issue. Thats what true documentaries should be about. Presenting unbiased facts and letting the viewer make up their own mind.

yeah Michael Moore is nothing more than a lefty Rush Limbaugh, different sides of the arguement, but same annoying BS.

At any rate, good movies you say?

I would advise a Clint Eastwood evening, If you could see Millon Dollar Baby, The Outlaw Josie Whales, Unforgiven, and /or Mystic River, you would be in for a treat. I dont buy that they are the greatest movies ever made, but in my mind the represent what all movies should aim to do. They are challenging on multiple levels, well packaged, and most importantly entertaining. In a lot of ways i see Clint and the Johnny Cash of the Movie world. Both have grasped making art that appeals to your everyday joe, but ladens said art with themes that can captivate you mentally as well...

you got that right, but sadly enough we as a world live in culture where intellectual honesty is something only maintained by the minority. Unfortunately most people have somesort of agenda they deem more important than people...

Read a book.

There's a really easy way to end Moore's reign of ignorance...DON'T GIVE HIM YOUR MONEY. Don't go to his movies, don't read his books, don't even buy a magazine if his face is on it or if there's an interview. Even talking about the subject this much is probably not helping.

There's a saying in Hollywood: "No publicity is bad publicity." ;)

Micheal Moore - I still don't like him, but I don't necessarily want him dead. I have to give him some credit, hes knows what the public wants.

My friend is completely into movies. I, not so much. I rarely get my ass in front of the tv. We want to have a movie night. I think our current list for movies is something like Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Time Bandits, Brazil, Swingers, some musical from the 50's and something monty python. The list is actually longer and more varied, but those are the only ones I can remember. (Note; I highly doubt we'll get around to doing it. We can barely get around to bus trotting.)

Mmm. Books. Someone gave me one the other day, said it made her think of me. Mind you, its completely twisted. Exquisite Corpse (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0684836270/ref=pd_bxgy_img_2/102-5238872-0347308?v=glance&s=books) by Poppy Z Brite (I'm so horribly afraid of that name. My name reminds you of Lite Brite, yet I write books about necrophillia. This is your childhood.) Things that made her think of me; rape, incest, pedophillia, necrophillia, homosexuality murder, aids, livers and curry and babies and acid... I really don't know what to think of that.
Books are so much better than movies. Movies don't turn me in the slightest, this book makes me gag. (To be honest, I don't read books like this. I'm so not used to it.)

Amen to that, i am currently on a strict hollywood boycott, i only go to movies that i know i want to support, and rent movies that also fit that catagory. Blockbuster and the cinema will be lucky to see me every 3 months. As for TV, i love my dvr, i rarely watch live tv, and when i do it is usually just for background noise.Same for mass market music/books. I love living in my self inflected seclusion of pop culture...

Talking about movies *Trying to change the subject off someone no-one likes*
What genres do you like the most.

I enjoy a good comedy, some i just dont find funny but others, they just hit the spot. I especially love Jim Carrey and Robin Williams. I am not much into horrors - but i am evolving into them.

How about anyone else?

Sykoi
04-19-2005, 02:22 AM
Jim Carrey is great - ditto with Williams (Especially his stand up)

Kuraku Hideaki
04-19-2005, 02:25 AM
Yes i agree. I love comedians who are actully funny. Many times i have watched people doing it for the money, being crap and not caring. It amazes me how they will - humiliate if you must - themselves for an extra dollar in front of an angry bar audience.

ashley
04-19-2005, 02:26 AM
Comedy. British comedies. Mmm. Men in dresses.

And canadian dramas. Seriously. But not so much british ones, whenever I see one of them now, all I can think of is my brother saying "Don't ever let me be poor.... *five minutes later* and british. Ashley, don't let me be poor and british. Okay?" while watching some bad british drama that I can't even remember the name of.

Luckily for me, comedies and dramas mix well.

Kuraku Hideaki

Yeah, my little brother crazy. He copies everything he sees from the t.v. After living with me and my bro long enough, you start to realize that if you give us a Jim Carrey movie, we are able to memerize every single bit of it - which is scary sometimes. lol, we would just walk around sometimes reciting our favourite parts of the movie...

good times.

It's in China, Hong Kong. Otherwise quite correct. It takes place as the Japanese invade Hong Kong, and he is later on transported to a prison camp out in the desert, not too far from the chinese coast.

Hong Kong is a city in China.

Shinoku
04-23-2005, 04:27 PM
Depends on how you look at it. It was a colony of the British loaned from the Chinese actually as a trade port. Now most of the British have left the city and the Chinese re-took it. But under the British authority much more freedom (read; gambling, own establishments, etc.) was allowed and thus the current city of Hong Kong just like any other western city but in a country ruled by communism. There should be a clash of both sides one day and one of these sides is gonna have to go. My bet is on communism ^^

No they would not. Japan has powerful allies and China has pretty much nobody.

Also while Japan's military is small its cutting edge and China has stuff from the 50s and 60s. As an example Japan uses the latest ships that are on par with what we use. Aegis Class kinds of ships. An Aegis Class ship can target and fire on over 100 targets at the same time. On the other hand China uses ships with radar syatems like we had 40 years ago. China may have a much larger army but they would never get it past Japan's Navy/Air Force to land it on Japanese soil.

Japan wouldn't attack China anyway, they don't have an expansionist national policy. Anyway no one would be stupid to start that, cause America would join in, then Korea, then Britian, then Italy (who would change sides later to the winning side if they were loosing ;-) ). However the current issue in the headlines which has created a dispute between china and Japan is about a school history textbooks which is now in all Japanese high schools. However the problem with the books is that it doesnt address the issue of Japanese war crimes in the WW2 section. Any opinions? Beebe out.

I have a very, uh, odd sleep schedual. Its hard to say where my day begins. I prefer to go to sleep at 5pm, until 8pm, then staying up until 6am or 7am, and sleeping for an hour or so. I know, thats only four hours of sleep. But when I get whats mosts people's enough sleep, I'm in a really, really bad mood. Angry constantly.

Prepare to toss everything you know about (roman-based) languages, out the window when learning Japanese - you read backwards, the sentences seem backwards when you first learn it (i.e. I Japanese understand) and the culture is a lot different.

Although its a lot of fun to learn, and use :)

SmokeDragon

Wow, 5 books? that novel must've been really cool. Im just sad i've never heard of it.

Same thing with Tolkien, and Lord of the Rings - at first i knew nothing of its existance. Then my cousin showed me a trailer for the first movie, a couple of months before its theatrical release.

Now, i know almost everything about it, from watching all the movies, including special features on the DVD's and reading the books, and WOW, im a real Tolkien Fan.

What saddens me is that his whole life, he published only the lord of the rings? wait...this guy doesnt have any other novels right? because if he does, i wanna know.

I may be incorrect but Britian has often through history had large amounts of X-pats in Hong-Kong. Was and may still be a Internation tax free zone. Much like the port of Tangier was for years.

Saw this movie in full yesterday on satelite, first time I'd seen the whole movie. Best part i believe was when he was salivating on plane, turns and salutes the Japanese pilots.

Great points you all bring up. Thanks Yong, that tag line ""No publicity is bad publicity," tells us all what I do with Michael Moore. lol Never seen a movie, interview, or a book, never will.
I think the other great Hollywood tag line is "Noone remembers your last successful project but EVERYONE remembers your last Bomb!"
A night of action films sounds more appealing than a night with Moore...hehe...Has anyone seen any really great Japanese action films on an epic scale? There was one made in the early 80's that comes to mind, "Heaven and Earth" NOT the 2003 version or the Oliver Stone version. I have been looking for a DVD release of this epic film, it seems to be really rare.:(

Why?

Perhaps because it's already 120+ posts and 1,000 views?

Anyway, even though "ketchup" is an extremely thrilling topic, I think we need to change it. Without going too nationalistic and patriotic, I would gladly discuss Ice Hockey WC and Sweden's accomplishments so far :P

Ehm, if that doesn't swing your way, we could always talk about the meaning of life? How do you comprehend it to all turn out and what do you think is the -one- most important thing to have done before you die?

Sooo i say anything right....

Ok i was eathing my favorite cereal of all time (Viva la Cinamon Toast Crunch!!) and i'm surfin the web. And suddenly i was attacked by some cyber ninjas. They jumped right out of the computer and started introducing themselves. One named Sykoi, was talking about this awesome game named Tatsumaki, but for some reasone everyone calles it T:LAW. So he ordered me to go to the site or else it's my head. So i go there and i join the forums and i'm completely addicted to the idea of the game and how some of the people actually have an opion of how the game could be built.

It was soooo 1337. (1337=leet=gay term 12 year olds with a cable connection use)

After i was through surfing Sykoi, and the developers of the game in cybersuits traveled through time to the future of Japan. The floors were covered in manga and the skyscrapers were huge. Than we traveled to Feudal Japan in the middle of a large brawl. I was almost attacked but i offered the soldier my Cinamon Toast Crunch and he humbaly sat down and munched on my cereal. Than suddenly i felt a rush as if i was falling and than a sharp pain in my side. I fell on the floor and awoke from my dream. OOOOOHHH.

ToshiMaru

hmm, highlander....i am VERY confused about the whole subject. I remember seeing some of its movies and i think some TV series too, but i am not caught up on the whole storyline. Okay...um...

The MOVIE:
The actor who played Raiden in Mortal Combat 1, was a katana wielding, irish/scottish warrior? and an immortal who was in a never ending battle against demons for more power and long life??

The SERIES:
He was a katana weilding immortal warrior who was chasing after another immortal demon who killed his wife? And fight against other people/demons and.....yea?

can somebody tell me the whole story? :newbie:

Here we are, born to be kings,
We're the princes of the universe.
Here we belong, fighting to survive
In a world with the darkest powers.
And here we are, we're the princes of the universe
Here we belong, fighting for survival
We've come to be the rulers of your world.
I am immortal, I have inside me blood of kings.
I have no rival, no man can be my equal
Take me to the future of your world.
Born to be kings, princes of the universe
Fighting and free, got your world in my hand
I'm here for your love and I'll make my stand
We were born to be princes of the universe.
No man could understand. My power is in your hand
Ooh, ooh, ooh, people talk about you.
People say you've had your day.
I'm a man that will go far.
Fly the moon and reach for the stars
With my sword and head held high
Got to pass the test first time-yeah
I know that people talk about me. I hear it every day.
But I can prove you wrong 'cause I'm right first time.
Yeah yeah alright watch this man fly, bring on the girls
Here we are. Born to be kings,
We're the princes of the universe.
Here we belong. Born to be kings,
Princes of the universe. Fighting and free
Got the world in my hands
I'm here for your love and I'll make my stand.
We were born to be princes of the universe.

I know this is going to spark a lot of debate, but its pretty much for one reason (And for good reason whether we like it or not): Oil

America controls a good majority of the World's Oil, and we (Bush) want to keep it that way...
Not to mention the fact that Bush Sr. started this whole middle eastern war 10+ years ago, and Jr. is just finishing it.

While I don't exactly like Bush (Didn't vote for him :p), its something that had to be done one way or another. (We were bombing Iraq almost every week, and it needed to stop and we needed to take out the real problem not the general problem)

At least thats my understanding of it all, but then again I try to keep my head out of politics.

Generally speaking, religion and politics should be avoided on forums unless those discussions take place under very controlled circumstances (like in a specific forum for this kind of discussions, that's also heavily moderated).

Political and religious views vary a great deal between ethnical groups as well as individuals, and are therefore one of the most contributing factors to flame wars.

At the moment it's not against the forum rules to discuss neither politics nor religion, however, I do disencourage people from doing so.

Hussein has been captured a loooong time ago, like at least two or three years ago. As far as main cause of war, who knows, probably oil reasons, political, and a backlash from 9-11 attacks, to try to get those responsible.

Woah, all this time im thinking Bush just wanted to get back at Saddam for him trying to assasinate his Father 10 years ago. Least thats what I read and seen. Plus 9/11 had ntohing to do w/ Saddam though. Leas I don't think so, thats Osama.

[EDIT] Oh yah, and as for the movie, I didn't know it was out yet, but I think im gonna' watch it as soon as I can, for I have loved allthe marvel movies they came out w/ so far. I loved Batman Begins O.o

I dont really see movies anymore, so i couldnt say. But there is one movie i really wanna see when it comes out. >.> Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Because Tim Burton produced this version and Jonny Depp is the main character. Sounds very interesting

I've really got to disagree with you on that one. There was this amazing basis reality, and the compelling urge to explain everything in the long standing Batman mythos that I think is missing from a lot of comic book movies. A lot of the time, many of the ideosyncracies of the superhero movie genre are explained away with the simple "that's just the way superheroes are."

Batman Begins was different, though. We get a worthwhile and believable explanation behind the suit, the batcave, even the batmobile. None of it seems odd and unrealistic, because we get ample motivation for a lot of the otherwise abnormal things that makes Batman what he is today.

Yes, that's probaly another reason why I liked it so much. It gave incredible insight on his past and how he became the "Batman" and why. From the title it seems like that. I prolly wouldve never watched it if it was just another one of those other Batman movies just re-made  I just mayb would have watched it if it was another sequel because I always want to see how they turn out.

Batman Begins was a great movie; especially the Ninja Army :cough: Bakemono:cough:, but, most of the people that i know that is a Batman Fan, says that it wasnt really along with the original story. Oh well, still a great movie.

One thing that i am really liking about the comic book movies, is that, before production; the teams do some research and add realistic science to the powers and their backgrounds. Thats one of the things that interests me the most.

And how about that Scarecrow guy? That was really freaky. I remember he was a real villain in the Batman comics and would do the exact same thing.

The scarecrow guy...ehehehehehe, he looks so girly. was that place he owned Arkam Asylum? or some other place? One thing that got me, i remebered in the comics and cartoon, Raz was white. When i saw than jap guy in the movie, i was like ??????, but then later, they revealed the truth.

I used to take both iaido and tai chi, though unfortunately i've had to let them go (a lot of it because of school when i was still there, and partially due to my own laziness). I can attest to the "life-changing" statement, especially in the case of iaido; it was something that really can just fill you with a sense of peace, among other things.

I suggest to anyone if they have a chance to study under a respectable master, to go for it. My sensei was a wonderful man.

I am upset. The news lies, they tell the world we are lower temperatures, then what our Time and Temperature says (118 on the phone here.) It says we got to 118*f and news says its only 115 outside. Who in the hell is going to be torrists in las vegas when it's that hot. It bugs me, they should just say the truth.

Kuzukago
07-16-2005, 09:22 AM
115? I'd probably go crazy and pull my skin off. I don't even want to imagine how it is. If it's 70 i think that's too warm.

Hiromi
07-16-2005, 11:44 AM
Bahh I'd probably go one step farther and just kill myself. I've got no air conditioning in my car, and 90 for me is unbearable - 118 would be nuts.

ShininShado

KazeKuroi

Dry heat sucks worse then humidity. Of course you get the annoying blanket of water, but when you sweat in dry heat, heh, what sweat? Your body doesn't have the ability to cool it self down. Your instantly stripped of all that is wet. The air even feels hot take a step outside and you feel like you stuck your self in a oven.

SUP ALL. Well I'm back from my trip to an Navajo Reservation and i'd have to say ...Dry Heat SUX! You are deprived from all water. (in fact all week i never sweat one bit and all my pores are clogged with dust)

However, humidity is annoying more than hot. It's like your in a broiler and your clothes never want to let go.

I've been in Arizona heat at 110 degrees, no problemo, 90+ with bad humidity is horrible. Not to say 110 degrees is pleasant, but compared to the humid weather isn't a different type of heat. I prefer the cold weather anyhow, under 80 and I'm set.

We are talking near 120s not 110s. Lake Havasu is the worst by far, It has a significant amount of humitidy and gets over 120 every year. And shinin, come spend a summer over here, We are over the 100s when the sun is down. You will see a significant difference. When I worked at the torrist hot spots, Lets just say New Yorkers, ect complained bout our heat. They never thought Dry heat could be worse then humidity on a warm day.

Current temperature, 12:42 am pst 102 degrees.

I spent several weeks in Arizona in my teens, the heat was so bad I got nosebleeds, but I'd take that heat any day to the humidity of here, maybe everyone feels differently about it though. It'd be the difference between scorching and like broiling I guessing, I'll choose chilling.

KazeKuroi
07-17-2005, 10:34 AM
the nose bleeds werent from the heat. Your membranes dry out over here. Happens to all those who are not used to dry air, and low elevations.

To each their own. But I surely love those days in the middle of the summer when we get 60% humidity and the air feels so good. It gets to like 96. But I can't live somewhere cold, I don't like snow.
