Oblivion has been released, WEEE! I will be picking up my collectors edition tommorow. I am watching the 12 hour marathon right now, wonder if this guy takes bathroom breaks eh?

Anyways this game looks so cool, I cannot wait to put it in my xbox 360 :D

EDIT *wow he had 30 lockpicks, and used them all on one door, HE broke all of them and a gaurd caught him! hahah that must suck!*

Weeeeeeeee! :)
Although I found the 3rd in the series (Morrowind) to be incredibly boring, Oblivion looks great.

You thought Morrowind was boring? ;_;

But then, to each their own. Daggerfall and Morrowind are both some of my favorite games ever.

My PC version should arrive in the mail today, about the same time that I'll be picking up my 360 version. Yaaay for overkill. ^^

Morrowind does get boring, but with all the hacks you can add to it, it can make for an interesting game at times. I always found though, that too many hacks made the game crash a lot, so you could only add so much custom content.

Oblivion looks sweet tho. I'll have to check it out for sure. I just hope in this one I don't have to hear "What do you want, Dunmer?" everywhere I go :)

Its not that its boring, its just that there was little to no direction in Morrowind - I liked the freedom... But it was too much freedom and I had no idea what to do at first :( (Took me over an hour to figure out where I was supposed to go, and I -walked- to the next town (took 10 minutes or so) because I didn't know there were flying creature/plane things :()
Just hope Oblivion doesn't make the same mistake.

Yeah, I too found it very hard to "get into" the game. Apparently, they've added some fast-travel system which allows you to travel instantly between places that you have explored. I've heard that all of the major cities will be available from the beginning, but don't hold me to it. I think that'll make the game a lot more enjoyable. I remember how boring it was, having to travel all the way to Vivec just to deliver some stupid message in Morrowind. The new reworked combat system looks like an improvement too - for example, blocking is now under player control. And the AI is very impressive.

I couldn't use half of the Silt Striders. In Syeda Neen and Ald Ruhn when I arrived on a Silt Strider the guy that was there to book passage would go "Uhhh" and fall dead. So I did a lot of walking, or used the Mage's Guild. I like walking anyway, especially in a game that has really nice outdoor scenery.

I had the winter patch that put snow on the ground in places. Dagon Fel looks awesome covered in snow with the rain and fog. I miss my little house on the hill there :(

Its hard to get into it, but once u figure the layout of things its addicting, and the story is awsome cause you can effect it so many different ways...i dunno when i will be picking this one up but DEFF soon!

When I first got Morrowind (free with a graphics card - I didn't actually choose to buy it) I thought it was overly complicated and boring as heck. I played it for a few hours, then didn't touch it for months. After repeating this cycle about 3 or so times, I began to discover the beauty of the game. Its extremely open ended, which can easily overwhelm a lot of first time players. There are so many factions, and so many skills to learn and places to explore. In short, this is the closest yet I've seen to a living, breathing world of fantasy (not including PnP games)

So after the first several hours of playing Oblivion on the 360 (haven't installed it on my computer yet), the verdict looks good. Visually, the game is all that it was hyped up to be. The game is just beautiful to look at. It's cooky to see NPCs interacting with each other randomly. I was pounced by this Argonian girl for example, who just up and talked to me for no reason (rather then it being one of those scripted, quest-starting convos in Morrowind).

The fast-travel system is actually /reintroduced/ rather then added, from Daggerfall, which preceded Morrowind. It makes life a lot easier and I'm sure will please many fans of the old games. However, the world is so lush that it seemed a pity to get right started using it. You're allowed to use a horse early on if you follow the plot, too, so it makes it all that much more enticing to just deal with the travel time.

It seems like the movement between the world 'panels' is a little less smooth then in Morrowind on the 360, but I'm expecting to see smoother transitioning in the PC version. The control scheme is all that is was hyped as well, easy to learn and use on the 360.

Character customization is /ridiculously/ good, as far as face goes. You still don't have much control over your body (none at all, I believe, or I missed it), but I was able to create a character that looked virtually identical to myself in face structure.

Needless to say, I'm addicted already, though I'm an admitted fanboy of the series. I think this game clears up a lot of the issues you were mentioning earlier. It even gets you started on combat early to keep you entertained through character creation.

It's worth a look, even if you only want to borrow it from a friend to check it out.

Sweet, thanks for the info Matty. I'm picking up my copy for the PC tonight at Best Buy ^_^ I haven't been this hyped about a game coming out since Bioware put out Jade Empire last year. I definitely think Oblivion will be worth the wait :)

If you found morrowind overly complicated then perhaps you should play less FPS brain cell killer games and more RPGs :P

I do sort of agree slightly about morrowind being easy to loose track of what your supposed to be doing. But when you think about it all MMO's have a learning curve of wandering around trying to find the next town, but once you get used to the world map its easy (having a good map/quest guide is a MUST for morrowind).

The devs realised this and have made Obliviion with sort of waypoints for quests from what I read.

I look forward to playing oblivion and was delighted to see the oblivion world map which includes MORROWIND! how cool would it be to go back to balmora or vivec in Oblivion.

For alls its good points and ground breaking material at the time I feel Morrowind had some huge flaws.

It seemed too easy to kill things for one, and the monsters lacked a bit of variety.
Another problem was Summons did very little damage and lasted at the most 30 seconds I think which was totally crap and pointless.
Finally, bad animations
Morrowind was littered with them and from what I see from Oblivion so far there might be some bad ones in it also :(
Not glaringly bad however, just not quite polished

One last thing that bugged me about morrowind was the way theres so many classes and combinations they all tend to seem very similar as far as melee classes being alike and magic classes being alike.

In saying that there is too many great things to list about Morrowind without making an essasy, I hope to be playing Oblivion soon.

I don't think you can go back to visit the other provinces. I haven't tried yet, but my guess it will be like the other games, which have each taken place in a single province, e.g. Daggerfall took place in the Daggerfall province of the Empire, Morrowind in Morrowind... I think they appear on the map so you can see where this province lies in relation to the others.

After watching all of the trailers, I'd have to say that this game looks awesome. I never actually got into Morrowind, but I've heard it's good... but man, this game looks great!

And unscripted NPC interaction and conversations? Oh come on, when does Artificial Intelligence become... uh, OFFICIAL Intelligence!? It's kind of cool to see the PC pass an NPC on horse and have him say "Well met, citizen."

I'm hopelessly addicted to Oblivion right now. :(

Many things were fixed in Oblivion. For one, the dice roll combat in Morrowind has been replaced with a cohesive battle system where a hit is a hit, no questions asked.

Also, minigames have replaced things like persuasion and lockpicking, making both far more fun than waiting for a favorable dice roll (though that route is possible if you'd rather not go through the minigame).

The fast travel is fantastic, and it makes the game that much more fast paced. Being able to zoom back to a quest contact to finish a quest is great.

The greatest achievement in Oblivion (and one that directly addresses Sykoi's fears) is that the player is given direction the moment they step into the game. You're given this grand mission to fulfill, and it's your choice whether you want to undertake it immediately, or go tinker with the rest of the world instead.

It's a great mix: You can either go right into the main quest and fundamentally change the world with each successive mission, or you can join umpteen guilds, assassinate, steal, rescue, harvest or chat to your heart's content. The balance is just spectacular.

I'll have to take a break from Oblivion as Kingdom Hearts 2 comes out this week, and I have a lot of paperwork to get through for my new job. Hopefully I'll get some quality time to play, once I settle into my apartment in Japan.

Actually, the coolest thing of all is walking into a town and seeing two townsfolk chatting randomly. You can then move in and eavesdrop on them. If you talk to one of them mid conversation, you can actually get a quest pertaining to their conversation. :D

Here's a great example of the depth in the game:

Anyone who plays Morrowind realizes how many items there are in the game. There's not just actual battle items, but also useless knick knacks like jars, spoons, bowls, tongs, shears and pencils. A few days ago I was traversing a dungeon in search of ectoplasm (the ghosts in that dungeon dropped it). As I ventured around the dungeon looting lone chests, I found a lone statue sitting on a pedestal. Checking to find its value to be in the 400 gold range, i took it off its pedestal and stashed in my satchel. When I reached the Imperial City once more, I sold the artifact, and used the money to buy new spells and armor.

Just yesterday, a herald approached me. Apparently his master, a wealthy noble in the Imperial City, caught wind of my artifact acquisition, and was summoning me to acquire the rest of the artifacts in the same collection.

To think, I never would've gotten the quest if I hadn't gotten that statue from that one cave. :)

Augh! This is starting to get depressing. First off, now 4 of my buddies already have Oblivion before I do. I just discovered that not only do I need a new graphics card, I also need the hardware necessary to play/watch dvds on my computer (just learned Oblivion is in dvd format). I feel so outdated >.< Does anyone know if there is a place where I can get around the dvd problem, perhaps download it online or something?

selmo

I dont think it is in dvd format unless you buy special edition, the normal one (10 bucks cheaper) i thinkis on 4 normal discs could be wrong though

Anyone else know? I was reading up on it in a few threads at mmorpg.com and they were all saying it was in dvd format ; ; I'll be really happy if that isn't true though.

Yeah, I got sick of waiting for Amazon to ship the game, so I "acquired" it from BitTorrent. Sadly, my Geforce FX card has trouble with light effects, so the game runs at terrible framerate when I enter certain houses and dungeons. Combat also causes the frame rate to drop dramatically. But I like the game too much to quit just because of that. Good work, Bethesda. :)

Tomoshibi, sorry, but it is indeed in DVD format. But hey, a DVD-ROM is really cheap and easy as hell to install (did it last weekend by the way), so it's not such a big deal. The graphics card is a lot worse. Hope you get around to playing it soon. ;)

You are lucky! Yes, Oblivion is available online!
Check out Fileplanet's Direct2Drive service, www.direct2drive.com. I have bought several games from them and haven't had a problem with any, so I feel comfortable saying you can trust to get a functional download from them. However, patches can come slowly for their downloads, so just be prepared to expect to wait on some things. They are usually faster with providing patches to newer and more popular games.

I have to agree with Matty, Direct2drive is a nice service, even if Fileplanet isn't :(

Turn off the bloom if your gfx card is struggling

my system is far from good by todays standards but I can make oblivion look REAL great (granted not really playable because of like 5fps haha, but it does work :P)
Of course I end up playing on medium settings which doesn't look bad but not OMG amazing .

heres my system specs incase anyones being intimidated by the recommended specs.

AMD 2500+ barton core = 1800Mhz O/C to 2100Mhz
1gig RAM
SATA 80gig HDD
ATI Raedon 9700 128mb soft modded into a 9700Pro
DVD Drive
onboard sound (Realtek AC 97) not even sure if my sound chip passes min reqs but it seems to work anyway

Just a random question, about making the graphics look really good. I use a crack for oblivion to, and edited the ini file to see if i can boost the grphics cause i have a powerful comp. It seems that it will ignore what i change in the ini, the only thing i could think of is if it ignores the ini and goes straight to defaults, I may mess with it more when i get home though!

Kinjo

wheres the ini your editing?
you need to be editing "oblivion.ini" in: my documents/my games/oblivion/oblivion.ini
It actually makes a folder called my games in your documents

the oblivion_default.ini in the game directory seems to do nothing, not sure what its all about.
