I was browsing through the posts today and I found an old one that really peaked my interest. Pirates
Japan is an island. I'm wondering if boats will be implemented in this game, perhaps at a later time? They were used back then for mass transportation of goods, so it would be realistic. Not to mention smaller boats for tasks like fishing. So, I pretty much want to know if boats will have a place in this game. If so, will coastal raids be possible? Even naval battles, like to steal cargo or to fight other pirates? Just tossing a few interesting ideas around.

Hmmm, I think I might opt to have a big giant gambling casino type boat. That'd be awesome. Could have like several decks of geisha girls, and some gambling games, and could offer like a two day cruise.

It would be pretty cool to be part of some pirate family. The structure would work out well, too. The leader would be the admiral. Then the next people up would be the first mates (each would be required to have their own boat). Then you get the second mates, then the crew. Just think, a pirate family controlling a huge armada, controlling all shipping and transportion taking place on the sea...

yeah, pirating would be cool and all that... but whats going to be the requirements on operating your own vessel?
i mean, pirating is really awesome, but if all you need is a 1 man crew then you'll have hundreds of boats all trying to pirate each other.
on the other hand, if you need like 30-40 man crews per boat, thats going to be incredibly difficult to manage as a pirate... plus if you have NPC boats controlled by the shogunate, or people roleplaying such a thing, they usually go out there with their own garrison of guards just for the purpose of keeping that ship safe. it'd be pretty hard to manage a necessary crew to pirate the good stuff, because pirating fishing boats gets boring after you've gotten to know the captains of those vessels on a first name basis... i mean, how many pirates do you know that came up to a boat and said "hey ned, im gonna scuttle your craft and loot your booty... it won't get in the way of our friendship, right? i can still come over for dinner tomorrow, right?"
on another note, pirates > ninjas = divine mandate, so don't doubt it... and stop trying to combine pirates and ninjas, this isn't ninja scroll

im waiting for the evidence that ninjas > pirates... so far all you've shown is their lack of historical accuracy in their arguement and the fact that the website is called popealien.com and thus instantly loses credibility

I think historically piracy was common in japan, but I'm not sure what age it was ,particularly if it was before gun powder or not!?

Gun powder had existed in Japan far before when Tatsumaki takes place (It was invented in China in... 200 BC? 300 BC?), the thought of putting gun powder into long tubes and putting an object in that tube as well, wasn't.

Yeah I know (I meant gun powder weapons such as guns and cannons) :) but - I wonder if they didnt use cannons what type of weapon bushi pirates would use I know some civilizations would use bows with flaming arrows and catapults but I wonder what a japanese pirate would use... they used anything other then chasing the ship and forcing themselves onboard.

Well there were actually pirate ninjas... One of the schools of ninjutsu got it's extremely low stance from being pirates and having to stay low to balance on the rocky ships... So ninjas were able to become pirates, but pirates never became ninjas, therefore ninjas are superior.

The Oriental pirates were called the wako pirates but for the love of god I dont know what ship armament they had!
At first the Wako were japanese but toward the end of their reign they were mainly chinese.
I found some mention of the japanese boats used by Samurai and Wako (which was very dificult to find any mention of), Kobaya - Small, open roof ship found in medieval navies, manned by 20 oarsmen. and they were light enough to sometimes be brought down by arrows so I dont think they had siege weapons on them like oars and catapults.
http://www.samurai-archives.com/vocab.html#k
Edit their were other ships too the Sekiune (medium ship) and adakebune (large ships) the kobayo were small ships
If these ships didnt have cannons they used arrows I dont know about the durable they were though.
this link has a picture of some vessels they sell miniatures but I only give the link because they have pictures of some of the ships :) http://scheltrum.ironmammoth.co.uk/east28.html
